C000211654 Investment Objective and Strategy
JPMorgan International Equity Plus Fund describes its objective and strategy as follows, from its latest prospectus filed with the SEC by JPMorgan Trust IV.
Investment objective
The Fund seeks to provide long-term capital appreciation.
Principal investment strategy
Under normal circumstances, at least 80% of the value of the Funds Assets, which are expected to include both long and short positions, will be invested in, or have exposure to, equity investments and derivatives tied to those equity investments. Assets means net assets, plus the amount of borrowings for investment purposes. The Funds assets are invested primarily in long and short positions of equity securities of companies from developed countries other than the United States. Developed countries include Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Israel, the United Kingdom, and most of the countries of Western Europe. Plus in the Funds name refers to the additional return the Fund endeavors to add relative to traditional strategies that do not have the ability to take short positions.
Taking short positions allows the Fund to exploit more fully insights in stocks that the Funds adviser expects to underperform, as well as enabling the Fund to establish additional long positions while keeping the Funds net exposure to the market at a level similar to a traditional long-only strategy. The Fund generally is expected to maintain an approximate net 100% long exposure to the equity market (long market value minus short market value). However, the long and short positions held by the Fund will vary in size as market opportunities change. The Funds long positions and their equivalents will range between 90% and 150% of the value of the Funds net assets. The Funds short positions will range between 0% and 50% of the value of the Funds net assets. The equity securities in which the Fund may invest include, but are not limited to, common stock, preferred stock, depositary receipts and real estate investment trusts (REITs).
Derivatives, which are instruments that have a value based on another instrument, exchange rate or index, may be used as substitutes for securities in which the Fund can invest. The Fund will use swaps (including equity swaps) to establish its short equity positions, if any. The Fund may also use swaps to establish long equity positions, without owning or taking physical custody of securities. The payments may be adjusted for transaction costs, interest payments, the amount of dividends paid on the investment or instrument or other factors. The Fund may also use futures contracts to more effectively gain targeted equity exposure from its cash positions. The Fund invests in equity securities of foreign companies, including foreign subsidiaries of U.S. companies, across all market capitalizations.
The Fund may invest in securities denominated in U.S. dollars, major reserve currencies and currencies of other countries in which it can invest. The Fund may seek to manage currency risk by utilizing currency forward contracts to manage currency exposure. Investment Process: In managing the Fund, the adviser seeks to create an international equity portfolio using bottom-up fundamental research with a disciplined portfolio construction process. The adviser utilizes proprietary research, risk management techniques and individual security selection in constructing the Funds portfolio. In-depth, fundamental research into individual securities is conducted by research analysts who emphasize each issuers long-term prospects. This research allows the adviser to rank issuers within each sector group according to what it believes to be their relative value.
As a part of its investment process, the adviser seeks to assess the impact of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors (including accounting and tax policies, disclosure and investor communication, shareholder rights and remuneration policies) on the cash flows of many companies in which it may invest to identify issuers that the adviser believes will be negatively impacted by such factors relative to other issuers. These determinations may not be conclusive and securities of such issuers may be purchased and retained by the Fund. The adviser may sell a security as its valuations or rankings change or if more attractive investments become available.
