C000109687 Investment Objective and Strategy
AB FlexFee International Bond Portfolio describes its objective and strategy as follows, from its latest prospectus filed with the SEC by Ab Bond Fund, Inc..
Investment objective
The Fund’s investment objective is to generate current income consistent with preservation of capital.
Principal investment strategy
The Fund invests primarily in fixed-income securities of non-U.S. companies and governments. Under normal circumstances, the Fund invests at least 80% of its net assets in fixed-income securities and related derivatives. In addition, the Fund invests, under normal circumstances, in the fixed-income securities of companies located in at least three countries other than the United States. The Fund invests in a broad range of fixed-income securities in both developed and emerging markets and across all fixed-income sectors, including non-U.S. Government and corporate debt securities. Under normal circumstances, the Fund invests at least 75% of its net assets in fixed-income securities rated investment grade at the time of investment and may invest up to 25% of its net assets in below investment grade fixed-income securities (commonly known as junk bonds).
The Fund may at times invest in mortgage-related securities and inflation-indexed securities. The Funds investments may be denominated in local currency or be U.S. Dollar-denominated. The Fund may invest in debt securities with a range of maturities from short- to long-term. The Adviser selects securities for purchase or sale by the Fund based on its assessment of the securities risk and return characteristics as well as the securities impact on the overall risk and return characteristics of the Fund. In making this assessment, the Adviser takes into account various factors, including the credit quality and sensitivity to interest rates of the securities under consideration and of the Funds other holdings. The Adviser seeks to actively manage the Funds assets in relation to market conditions and general economic conditions and adjust the Funds investments in an effort to best enable the Fund to achieve its investment objective.
Thus, the percentage of the Funds assets invested in a particular country or denominated in a particular currency will vary in accordance with the Advisers assessment of the relative yield and appreciation potential of such securities and the relationship of the countrys currency to the U.S. Dollar. In order to reduce the Funds volatility, the Adviser expects under normal circumstances to hedge the majority of the Funds foreign currency exposure to the U.S. dollar through the use of foreign currency forward contracts and similar derivatives, although it will not be required to do so. The Fund may take a long position in one currency and a short position in another when it believes that the first currency will appreciate relative to the other. The Fund expects to use derivatives, such as options, futures contracts, forwards, or swaps.
Derivatives may provide a more efficient and economical exposure to market segments than direct investments, and may also be a more efficient way to alter the Funds exposure. The Fund may, for example, use interest rate futures contracts to gain exposure to the fixed-income markets and, as noted above, may use currency derivatives to hedge foreign currency exposure.
