C000071038 Investment Objective and Strategy

BMO TCH Core Plus Bond Fund describes its objective and strategy as follows, from its latest prospectus filed with the SEC by Bmo Funds, Inc..

Investment objective

To maximize total return consistent with current income.

Principal investment strategy

The Fund invests at least 80% of its assets in bonds. Fund investments include corporate, asset-backed, mortgage-backed and U.S. government securities. Although the Fund will invest primarily in securities with a minimum rating in the lowest investment grade category (i.e., rated BBB by Standard & Poors or Baa by Moodys Investors Service, or higher, or unrated and considered by the sub-adviser to be comparable in quality) at the time of purchase, the Fund may invest up to 20% of its assets in debt securities that are below investment grade, also known as high yield securities or junk bonds. While the Funds assets are predominantly U.S. dollar denominated, the Fund also may invest up to 20% of its assets in non-U.S. dollar denominated foreign debt securities, all or a portion of which may be emerging markets debt securities.

The Funds investment strategy is referred to as Core Plus because the Funds sub-adviser, Taplin, Canida & Habacht, LLC (TCH), an affiliate of the Adviser, has the ability to add high yield securities and emerging markets debt securities to a core portfolio of investment grade fixed income securities. TCHs strategy for maximizing total return is to adjust the Funds weightings in these sectors as it deems appropriate. TCH uses macroeconomic, credit, and market analysis to select portfolio securities. The Fund normally maintains an average dollar-weighted effective maturity of three to ten years. Effective maturity takes into account the possibility that a bond may have prepayments or may be called by the issuer before its stated maturity date. From time to time, the Fund maintains a portion of its assets in cash.

The Fund may increase its cash holdings in response to market conditions or in the event attractive investment opportunities are not available.
